Heatherbrae, Hunter Region, New South Wales
Existing zones split into sequenced sub-zones → the network never feeds everything at once → same pipes, pumps and water
an extensive network that runs out of pressure
Hunter Region Botanic Gardens is a 125-hectare, volunteer-run, not-for-profit garden. Decades of expansion extended the irrigation garden by garden into an extensive network of long runs feeding hundreds of drippers and sprinklers across seven zones.
The lines can't all run at once – when too many do, there isn't enough pressure and drippers and sprinklers fail. The site sits on old sand dunes, so water passes through the sandy soil before plants take it up, leaving juvenile plantings most exposed. The conventional fix – bigger pumps and new pipes – isn't viable on volunteer hours and donations.
