wicking baskets across two states, no way to see inside them
Future Village designed a spherical wicking hanging basket – the bottom hemisphere holds a water reservoir, the upper hemisphere is a wicking bed with planting holes in the shell.
The reservoir is hidden. The substrate is hidden. The only sign that something has gone wrong is when plants start showing stress – by then, the substrate may have dried out enough to become hydrophobic. You are not maintaining any more. You are replacing.
The baskets span two sites in different states – Oxford St in Bondi Junction and Minnawara Park in Armadale, Western Australia. Each site has its own microclimates: sun exposure, wind, reflected heat from buildings, seasonal variation – all affecting how quickly the reservoirs deplete.
Before NimbusVerde, the only option was scheduled visits. Go on a calendar, check the baskets, hope the timing is right. Some trips would find everything fine – wasted time. Others would come too late – damaged plants.
